How can IT Admins use ChatGPT right now?

Published 2/28/2023

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of ChatGPT and wondered “how is this really going to change what I do every day?”. And if you’re like us, you’ve probably seen various news articles in your news feed that list all the amazing ways it might be used for marketing, SEO, writing code, writing malicious code, etc. but we haven’t yet run across much on how ChatGPT could be useful for IT administrators today.

ChatGPT doesn’t come up with truly original ideas, it just takes all the content it has access to and combines it to answer your question or reply to you. And for lots of industries/jobs, it will be a great way to get started. like if you need to write an introduction for a new webpage…

Welcome to our webpage on how IT administrators can use ChatGPT for troubleshooting. As technology continues to advance at a rapid pace, IT administrators are facing increasingly complex technical issues that require prompt and accurate solutions. ChatGPT is a powerful tool that can help IT administrators to streamline their troubleshooting process, improve the user experience, and increase overall productivity. In this webpage, we will explore the various ways in which IT administrators can use ChatGPT right now to troubleshoot technical issues and provide better support to their users. We will also discuss the benefits of using ChatGPT and provide practical tips on how to integrate it into your IT workflow. Whether you're a seasoned IT administrator or just starting out, this webpage will provide valuable insights into how you can leverage the power of ChatGPT to optimize your IT operations.

So while that is cool and helpful for us right now, because we didn’t have to write that, it isn’t necessarily great. Sure it is well written but in reading it I think you will see what we do, it lacks personality and fun.

Ok sorry, getting back to what this is supposed to be about, how can ChatGPT help me as an IT administrator right now. What we have found is that it is another great tool in our toolbelt when you have a tough problem that search engines aren’t giving you exactly what you need. Say you need to find ways to improve the speed of login and app launching on a 2019 RDS environment. Obviously you should still use your expert level google search skills. But if other search engines aren’t bringing you anything other than the standard (and not helpful) answers like “just use faster/better hardware”, then this is where we’ve found ChatGPT really helpful. If you ask it direct questions like “how can I improve login speed on a 2019 RDS environment besides using better hardware”, then it can/does provide a different set of results than a standard internet search does. Will all the results be super helpful? obviously no. but will there be ideas or items in the list that might help you do other searches or look at the issue from a different angle? yes, absolutely.

So the very long winded answer to the question at hand, which is “how can IT administrators use ChatGPT today?” is pretty simple. ChatGPT is another tool in your toolbelt as and IT administrator. Ask it questions, tell it to exclude answers you know already won’t be helpful, and use what it gives you to continue your troubleshooting process.

Additionally, as IT admins, it is your job to stay current on technology. and AI is going to change lots of things. So get comfortable with it. Sign up for the free trial and start using it today. Yes it has shortcomings (like it doesn’t know anything after 2021 yet), no it won’t do your job for you (yet). But use it, and I’m sure you’ll be able to get some value from it now. Especially if you’re stuck on something that the entire internet doesn’t seem to have much help for yet, ChatGPT is a great tool to use. And assuming it doesn’t try to take over the world (which it claims to have no desire to do), then it will only get better over time and become more useful.

And of course, another (lazier) way to answer the question of “what are some ways IT administrators can benefit from using chatGPT for troubleshooting today?” would be to simple just ask ChatGPT (see below) but that won’t yield anything really original.
